Leaflet: a patient health literacy platform for clinicians

Leaflet gives patients medical information in language they can actually read, and gives clinicians a faster way to share it than a printer and a generic handout. We have been its development team since July 2022.

The problem

A patient leaves an appointment holding a printed sheet. It was written for a general audience, in clinical language, in English. If that patient reads at a different level, speaks another language at home, or is simply frightened and not absorbing much, the sheet has done close to nothing. The information was delivered and not received, and nobody finds out until something goes wrong.

Health literacy is the term for that gap, and it is not a small one. The clinician's side of the problem is just as real: finding the right material, tailoring it to the person in front of them, and getting it to them takes time that a consultation does not have.

What we built

Two connected products from one build. Clinicians get a portal for finding, tailoring and sending material, with the administrative tooling to manage what is available. Patients get what they were sent, on whatever device they happen to have, without an app to install or an account to create at the worst possible moment.

On Clutch, Leaflet's co-founder records the scope as platform design, development, source code testing, deployment, documentation, training and ongoing maintenance, and singles out high uptime and quick load times across devices. Those last two are not incidental in healthcare. A patient opening a link on an old phone on mobile data is the normal case, not the edge case, which is why the delivery side is deliberately lightweight.

The outcome

  • Medical information delivered in language patients from any background can actually read
  • Clinicians sharing tailored material in seconds rather than printing generic handouts
  • Two connected products, one for clinicians and one for patients, from a single build
  • A relationship running since July 2022, with the same team still on it

What we did on this engagement

Healthcare software development, custom software development, scoping and technical consultation. Leaflet is the second healthcare platform we have built and still support, alongside AirVendor.

About Leaflet

Leaflet is at the forefront of transforming healthcare through its innovative digital platform. Their mission is to enhance patient health literacy by delivering tailored and personalised medical information to patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. Leaflet offers comprehensive solutions for both clinicians and patients, empowering individuals to take control of their healthcare journey.

The Leaflet Project
Leaflet approached us in tandem with one of our partners with a compelling vision: to create a digital platform that would revolutionise how patients access and comprehend medical information. Their objective was clear: to bridge the gap in health literacy by providing culturally sensitive and personalised content that would empower patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare.
The Impact of Leaflet
Leaflet gives patients medical information written for them, in a language and at a reading level they can actually use, covering their condition, their treatment options and what happens next. On the clinician side it replaces hunting for a generic handout with sending the right material in seconds, which matters most for patients whose first language is not English.

"One of the most impressive aspects of working with OK200 was our direct interaction with Paul (CTO and Founder) throughout the entire process. It's rare to have such direct and sustained access to a company's leadership, especially in the software development industry. This gave our collaboration a highly personalised touch, ensuring that our needs and concerns were always a top priority.

Furthermore, their promptness in email responses and actions was beyond expectations. In an era where delayed communications can significantly hinder project progression, their responsiveness was a breath of fresh air."
